Choosing A New Puppy

Choosing A New Puppy

Taking on a dog is not a decision to be taken lightly. Although you will be rewarded with a special friend for all the family, there are many things to consider before committing.

  • All puppies are cute. How big will the dog grow and is it suitable for your home.

  • Will it fit into your lifestyle? Dogs love to walk everyday, even on cold, dark winter nights and in the rain?

  • What type of temperament will he have? Not all breeds mix well with children or cats! Terrier types tend to be feistier then say a Labrador. There are many books available to help you choose a suitable breed.

  • Consider the cost of grooming. Poodles and other breeds need regular grooming every six to eight weeks.

  • Veterinary bills, booster jabs, worming and flea preparations are also a significant cost to be taken into consideration.

  • Remember, a puppy will take time to become house trained and will possibly chew!

Here are a few questions that you might want to ask yourself before adopting a pet or choosing the right breed:

  • What are you looking for in a pet?

  • What do you expect from a pet?

  • With puppies, how many training classes can you take them to?

  • Do you have small children?

  • Do you frequently go on vacation? (Is this pet prone to separation anxiety?)

  • Are you okay with a "talkative" pet?

Are you ready? Take time in choosing your puppy. You must be prepared for a lot of hard work and a change to your own lifestyle. In return you receive undivided love from your new friend.
