Jumping

Jumping

It’s a common scenario; a visitor appears at your door and he is greeted with an energetic bundle of fur licking his face and jumping up and pawing at his clothes! Dogs view meeting humans as a pleasurable and exciting experience. This excitement can cause to jump up. The solution is to be strict from the very beginning – no jumping up at all. Remember, it is impossible for a dog to sit and jump up at the same time.

Tips for preventing jumping:

  • When you arrive home, command your dog to sit. Ignore him completely until he sits. Don’t talk to him or give him any attention.

  • When he sits, offer praise, if he then becomes excited again, request him to sit and repeat as necessary.

  • Offer a treat to reinforce good behavior. Your dog will quickly realize he will not receive any attention until he sits. Your visitors will be impressed with his good manners.
