Pulling On The Lead

Pulling on the lead

Dogs pulling on their lead is a very common problem and is probably one of the most annoying behavior problems. It is not enjoyable to be dragged around your local park by your dog! The pulling and tugging can become a vicious circle. Pulling can also cause serious injury to you and your dog.

Tips for preventing pulling on the lead:

  • Avoid making your dog excitable pre-walk by saying “walkies” or shaking his lead.

  • Consider investing in a specific anti-pulling full body harness.

  • Choose a long, flat lead. A short lead will stimulate your dog to pull more.

  • Only walk forward on a loose lead. Your dog will quickly understand he can only move forward on a loose lead.

  • Keep praising his good behavior when the lead is slack.

  • If your dog pulls forward, don’t scold him. Use gentle pressure to rebalance him until the lead is slack again.

Your dog will quickly realize he will be praised for his good behavior and walkies should become a pleasurable experience!
